@Brian Zuber,
Thanks for the response and idea. I could not find the features I wanted; totally free checking, free checks, totally free debit card, free ATM use at any US ATMs, refund of all ATM charges by other institutions, totally free transfers between accounts at any institution in the US, free bill pay and scheduling of payments one time or reaccuring, interest on checking, no minimum balance ever, etc.
I looked at a lot of CUs, but none had what I wanted. Besides which, there were none that were basically an Internet-based credit union or catered to that sort of thing. This made it impossible to narrow down the many choices. It took forever to find even basic information.
Since I have had experience with a credit union having the same silly problems with bad managers and account snafus, I have no problem with choosing an Internet-based bank. Not that I will keep any significant money in it, which makes it acceptable. Serious money goes into Pecunix.

@Michael. Find a high tech credit union and you’ll have everything that a big bank could offer. My CU has totally free checking, totally free debit card, mobile, text and outstanding online banking. An ATM network with nearly 5,000 atms, credit card with rewards and a low rate, auto loans at 2.4% and mortgages at 3.99%. What else are you looking for? Oh and this CU is only $110million in assets……

Much easier to find credit unions at:
www.creditunion.coop or www.lovemycreditunion.org

There must be other alternatives besides credit unions. They appear a little too local for my taste. The local banks offered me nothing when I needed them during foreclosure. I wouldn’t do any business with them any more than with large banks. So that leaves gold-based organizations, and various similar international systems. I just need to know that I can be a citizen of the world and use my little ol’ debit card wherever I desire, while keeping my small earnings safe and secure.
Maybe someone can address these and other alternatives. Otherwise we have little alternative. Good competition should have given us lots of choice. They must be out there somewhere.

The link to search for a credit union shows nothing in my area although there are several including the one I belong to. I’m not sure how reliable that search page is.
What about Amalgamated Bank? It calls itself a bank for Labor.
What about credit cards, mortgages and car loans? The big banks are making a lot more money off those than personal checking and savings.

I’m already a memeber of the NAVY FCU, but I do my day to day banking with Chase. Would shifting all my funds to NFCU be acceptable?
@ Michael, no Ally bank is part of the conglomerate that got us in this mess….go with a local Community Bank where the money you deposit stays within that community to make loans, etc.
What about Internet banks? What about gold accounts? Would a bank like Ally be a good alternative?
